Super Mario Run Set to Grace Android Screens on March 23

Android-toting millennials, rejoice! The super-popular Super Mario Run mobile app will soon be available at your fingertips (literally).

That’s right, the game that’s stolen the hearts of nostalgic 20 to 35-year-olds across the globe is now widening its accessibility by introducing an Android version of the app. Nintendo recently announced via a Tweet that Super Mario Run will arrive on Android devices on March 23, available for download from the Google Play Store.

The move comes after the initial introduction of Super Mario Run on iOS reaped in around 40 million downloads within the first four days of release last December – a figure that by now is fast approaching a whopping 100 million.

Why has the game only been available on iOS up until now?

According to reports, piracy issues have been the main roadblock curbing Super Mario Run’s availability on Android devices. This boils down to Nintendo’s uber-strict policies regarding the protection of its IP. The mega gaming conglomerate overcame these issues for iOS by demanding an always-on internet connection stipulation. Upon the initial release of the game, Super Mario Run producer Shigeru Miyamoto stated: “We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection with all three of the [Super Mario Run] modes to keep all of the modes functioning together and offering the game in a way that keeps the software secure”.

Despite piracy remaining a rigid concern for developers on Android platforms, it seems Nintendo has now been able to achieve that high level of security on this mobile operating system, too.

How can I download the game?

Super Mario Run enthusiasts can pre-register for the game here. This will prompt the delivery of a notification when the game is ready to download, enabling you to be one of the first Android users treated to the adventures of Mario and his bevy of lovable characters.

Downloading is free; however, punters should take note that you are initially only provided access to three early levels. To unlock the full game, you’ll have to pay a once-off fee of $9.99.

While there has been a bit of backlash in retaliation to the fee, Nintendo has assured users that there are no multiple charges. Regardless, at this point, only slightly more than five per cent of users have forked out the extra price on iOS devices to gain full advantage of the two-dimensional mobile gaming app.

What makes the game such a winner?

Although restricted to Apple devices thus far, Super Mario Run has managed to rake in over $53 million in revenue in just three short months. Similar to the widely-popular Pokémon Go craze that saturated society last year, its success is largely driven by its return to players’ nostalgic roots. Here, Nintendo has taken a game traditionally operated by stationary, control-wielding players, and revolutionised it into a finger-tapping, thumb-scrolling, on-the-go version – the tokenistic gestures beckoned by the technology boom.

In other words, Super Mario Run is the perfect marriage of old-school fun and new-age devices. It’s rendered for a mobile-savvy audience who have grown up with the influence of both worlds, inevitably becoming active participants in the evolution of our digital society as we know it today.
